Health & Social Care
Health and social care at Waterhead Academy develops students into individuals who are more aware of themselves and those who live around them. Health and social care looks at how people develop through their lives, the issues that may affect their development and how they can be supported through the services that are available to them in the NHS and wider area. Studying health and social care allows students to become more aware of the world around them and the people in their families and communities. The skills that are developed will help them to understand their development, their responses to key events and how they can support others when it is needed. Furthermore, they are encouraged to develop the skills that are needed to care for others, such are maintaining dignity, showing respect and empowering individuals to allow them to be independent. These skills will be of benefit to all students studying health and social care, even if they do not enter into a career in this sector.

Students can use real life experiences of themselves or family members to helps support their learning, as understanding real life situations allows them to discuss services and barriers in depth and with a clear understanding. This can also be used to help students understand some of the barriers that they may face as they become adults and need to access services for themselves. |
Students build on knowledge from Yr9 and the prior learning from health and social care service in the previous half terms s to look at how people are cared for. This is also important for students who may wish to move straight into employment after yr11 and it develops skills for the working world. Students may also use real life experiences of caring for others in their families to support their learning. |
Students use their knowledge to demonstrate how they would use care values in a setting to look after specific individuals, considering what they would do & why their actions are appropriate. This forms the basis of CA2B and allows students to develop skills that would be needed in a HSC workplace environment, allowing them to prepare for life after Yr11.
